The members of two local Lions and Rotary clubs recently hosted a community outreach in the village of Kuru Kururu on the Linden/Soesdyke Highway.
After spending some time promoting the initiative, members from both clubs held the venture at the Kuru Kururu Primary School Annex two Mondays ago.
From around 9:00 to 14:00 hours, the entourage comprising club members and representatives from different agencies listened to the concerns, questions and issues of about 100 residents who participated.
They addressed issues related to residents’ national insurance, land titles, welfare and counseling as well as legal affairs. Complaints were forwarded to the Guyana Power and Light (GPL) and the Guyana Water Incorporated (GWI).
President of the Guyana Association of Women Lawyers ,Simone Morris-Ramlall and Association member Kean Trotman, two National Insurance Scheme (NIS) agents, past Rotary Demerara member affiliated with Help and Shelter and other Lions and Rotarians participated in the event which was the first in the history of both Clubs.
Speaking to Kaieteur News, President of Rotary Demerara, Ossie James, explained that he approached the President of the Lions Club of Georgetown Stabroek, Odessa Debarras because he was seeking a way to have the clubs, which share similar mandates, not only collaborate but also work on a community-centered project aimed at promoting volunteerism.
“In addition to assisting the residents, one of the goals of the program was to promote volunteerism in Guyana. It was also hoped that ventures of such nature would be continued in the future, perhaps with other volunteer organisations coming on board as well,” James expressed.
Rotary President James reflected that Lions Debarras “was equally enthused when approached with the idea and she mentioned that it had been one of her goals to have Lions and Rotary collaborate on projects in Guyana.”
Both leaders, he said, saw the initiative as a great start to such a relationship.
