The top performers of the National Grade Six Assessment in Regions Five and Six all lived up to the expectations of their teachers.
The top school of both regions, the All Saints’ Primary School, had four of its students being awarded four of the five top positions in the Berbice area. They are Simeon DeAbrue, Sarah Reid, Johnaton Seeraj and Keola Vanderstoop, while Rosignol Secondary’s Grace Itwaru copped the top position of Region 5.
Speaking with Kaieteur News recently, Simeon De Abrue thanked “My God Jehovah for His help for giving me the ability and strength and my parents and loving sister Shenae for their help along the way, especially my teacher Sir Basant for his help throughout Grades Five and Six.”
His father, Clement DeAbrue, said that Simeon being successful really came as a surprise. He encouraged all parents to spend extra time with their children, “and trust me, success will be on the way.”
Sarah Reid, who obtained 509 marks, thanked God for helping her “to get through this and also my parents and grandparents—my teachers and my friends.”
Jonathon Seeraj thanked God, his family and teachers, especially Sir Basant for his success. His mother, Marian Seeraj, urged parents to “work hard with your children and support them—you will enjoy the successes.”
Keola Vanderstoop, with 515 marks, was also elated.
Their teacher, Mr. Basant Jagdeo, proud class- teacher of the class of 2014 remarked that it is nothing strange for All Saints’ [Primary] to excel, “so whatever we have this year is of no surprise.”
The success of these children comes as no surprise—we have been expecting this—they are hardworking and dedicated children and we have the support of their parents. The school continues to live up to its motto of ‘Only the Best is Good Enough’. The educator urged parents to be in constant contact with the school so that they can keep up-to-date with their children’s education.
He underscored a well- disciplined child, “and not only the children but the parents, too, need to be disciplined—I am so proud today that my school is still on the list of the top schools in Region Six and I can assure you that in years to come, it will still be there.”
Meanwhile, Grace Iwaru of the Rosignol Secondary School was Region Five’s top student, with 518 marks. The proud cricketer of her school was elated when her teacher gave her the news of her success. Itwaru, who wants to become a teacher, recently helper the school to win the National Library Quiz, was the runner-up Best Speller in the National Final. Her favorite subject is Mathematics. Her teacher, Mr. Kelvin Rose said that his expectations for Itwaru were high. “I did not expect number one but I expected her to do well because of her dedication towards work and she is just naturally brilliant.”
