New technology that will allow customers to check their consumption of electricity online has been
introduced by the Guyana Power and Light Inc. (GPL).
According to the state-owned company yesterday, it has completed the installation phase of the Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) Project and has inaugurated its customer involvement phase.
GPL customers who reside or own businesses within Avenue of the Republic to Vlissengen Road and North Road to South Road in Georgetown, will be able to register online and read their consumption in real time from any internet-ready device from anywhere in the world.
For customers using desktops, they will have to register using http://ami.gplinc.net while mobile devices can do so by visiting http://ami-mobile.gplinc.net.
“This new service is part of the company’s vision to transform the way it provides electricity services to its customers through the use of modern technology.
The implementation of the AMI project commenced last year with the installation of approximately two thousand (2000) meters in the pilot zone.”
GPL explained that the AMI is an integrated system of smart meters, communications networks and data management systems that enables two-way communication between GPL and customers.
“AMI meter consumption can be read online and only requires customers to sign up using their account number and name. Customers can access updated readings of their electricity consumption every 15 minutes or hourly.”
Some of the new metering technology introduced in certain parts of the city that will allow for customers to read their consumption online.
GPL said yesterday that the design of the technology also allows a smart comparative analysis for hourly, daily, monthly and yearly consumptions.
In essence, GPL will be able to track unusual usage by customers and even in cases where customers would be using bypass to stop the meters from running, AMI would be able to pick up the patterns.
“In addition, the new service provides customers with a calculator which calculates the wattage and the amount of electricity each electrical item present in the home or business uses. This knowledge provides customers with the power of making more value added decisions relative to purchasing energy efficient items and monitoring usage.”
The AMI technology is being implemented under the “Sustainable Operation of the Electricity Sector and Improved Quality of Service” project which is a US$5.5M loan agreement received through the Government of Guyana from the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB).
GPL is investing millions to reduce losses from theft and technical problems.
Already GPL has introduced an online possibility for customers to receive their bills.
A US$40M-plus Chinese funded program to replace the transmission lines along the coast and build seven new sub-stations to manage the power is currently ongoing.
Earlier this week, IDB announced that it has approved over US$60M in financing that will target the replacement of new transformers, hiring of management and improve efficiency at GPL.
An increase in the demand for power has been pushing GPL to look for ways to source alternative, cheaper power, including a wind farm and hydro-electric facilities in the hinterlands.
