Eletra Sports Club launches Sports Expo at Eve Leary To raise funds for cricket tour to B’dos

The Eletra Sports Club, which was formed in April 2012 and is located in Diamond on the East Bank of Demerara, yesterday launched its Sports Expo at the Police Sports Club ground Eve Leary to assist in raising funds to take their school cricket teams to the Annual Sir Garfield Sobers and the Charlie Griffith Schools cricket tournaments in Barbados.
The Sports Expo continues today at Eve Leary with cricket and football matches while the Expo moves to Tagore Secondary in Corentyne Berbice on Saturday July 5 and the Blairmont Community Center in West Bank Berbice the next day.
On Saturday July 12 the Expo shifts to the Mackenzie Sports Club ground in Linden and concludes in Region two on Saturday Anna Regina Community Centre on the Essequibo Coast.

The Eletra Institute hopes to send teams to participate in the Charlie Griffith under-13 cricket tournament from July 9-21 and the Sir Garfield Sobers International schools under-19 competition from July 3-23 and the exposure to these tournaments should be very important for those who want to have a career in cricket and launch their National youth team careers.
Nazia Persaud, the Club’s Public Relations Office lamented a lack of support to send the teams to Barbados for the most prestigious school’s tournament in the Caribbean, pointing out in addition to trying to raise funds for the tour the club is also in the process of trying to resuscitate the Diamond ground on 11th Street Diamond.
“We are not getting the kind support we would have liked, especially from the Government. Our Club’s Coordinator Devika Gobin, who also a football referee and junior Coach, was flatly turned down by Director of Sports Neil Kumar when we approached the National Sports Commission for assistance,” Persaud disclosed.
Daniel Richmond is coach of the two cricket teams for the Educational institution while Gobin Coaches the school’s football team.
Persaud informed that the Club has sent out over 100 letters seeking sponsorship but the response has been less than favorable while an ugly incident at the Better Hope ground on the East Coast of Demerara when the club requested the use of the venue for matches, suggested racial discrimination.
The Eletra Institute is hoping to send two teams of 15 players each in addition to the officials and anyone interested in supporting the Educational Institution could contact Persaud, Gobin or Shavani Balkaram on telephone numbers 660-6959, 693-0994 or 216-3385 for more information.
Ascension Secondary, Friendship Secondary, Cummings Lodge Secondary, West Ruimveldt Primary and Eletra Institute were the schools which competed in both Football and cricket yesterday.
