The Ministry of Health keeps on implementing strategies and measures to ensure that a higher level of health care is obtained.
Yesterday, its 2014 semi-annual Regional Health Officers (RHOs) and Programme Heads meeting resumed after being officially opened on June 12.
The two-day meeting which is being held at the Grand Coastal Inn, East Coast Demerara, allows RHOs to engage in direct dialogue with programme heads, while reviewing challenges, highlighting achievements and at the same time engaging in discussions on areas of collaboration.
The officers also had the opportunity to present a report on health services in their respective regions, after which they engaged in discussions on enhancing their services while overcoming challenges.
The event which is being held under the theme “Health Vision 2020 Shining through the Regions” saw participation from Minister of Health, Dr. Bheri Ramsaran, Permanent Secretary, Leslie Cadogan, Deputy Permanent Secretary (DPS), Trevor Thomas, Manager of Regional Health Services, Alfred Aaron, Chief Medical Officer (ag) Dr. Morris Edwards, Director of Regional Health Services Dr. Monica Odwin, Representatives of the Pan American Health Organisation (PAHO) along with representatives from the Regions 1, 2, 3 and 4 health departments.
Speaking at the ceremony, DPS Thomas said that the meeting comes at a time when Guyana is giving priority to achieving its Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and he expressed hope that all participants would leave with motivation to enhance the health services in their respective regions.
He noted that while there may be challenges in meeting the demands of the public, RHOs must try their best to meet these expectations, and not use the challenges as an excuse for not delivering. He also highlighted that the health sector is not one that is starved for resources and in this regard medical practitioners should fulfill their mandate.
Speaking on the Health Vision 2020, Dr. Edwards touched on the goals for health care that are outlined in the strategy. He also said that the vision will focus on improving health literacy and achieving universal health coverage.
Day One of the meeting also covered the presentation of Regions One and Two health services along with a presentation on mental health from Dr. Bhairo Harry and Dr. Balserio, Psychiatrist Consultants, GPHC and an overview of training in Health Science Education from Medex Wilton Benn, Director of Health Science Education.
The meeting continues today with presentations on Regions Three and Four health services and an update on vector-borne diseases by Dr. Reyaud Rahman, Director of Vector Control Services (VCS) along with several other presentations. (GINA)
