“We do not take threats. If the Opposition wants to pass a no-confidence Bill then let them pass it, and we will be ready to deal with the consequences of that.”
This was the firm reaction of President Donald Ramotar on Wednesday to the reported consideration by the Alliance For Change (AFC) to bring a no-confidence motion against the “Ramotar government.”
The President made this assertion during his address at the opening of the Annual General Meeting of the Private Sector Commission which was held at the Pegasus Hotel.
As he neared the conclusion of his presentation, Ramotar emphasized that his government is committed to continue its work in protecting and developing the country.
When asked by media operatives to elaborate on the level of his preparedness for the consequences that may follow if the political opposition party goes through with the Motion, the President’s succinct response was, “I am prepared for anything , I am prepared for it…I am a warrior.”
Vice Chairman of the AFC, Moses Nagamootoo, had reportedly said that his party is considering a no-confidence motion against the Ramotar government.
The parliamentarian said that the action is being considered against the backdrop that government has developed a disregard for accountability. One example to support this, he said, was that government had already spent $4.5 Billion of the $37.4 Billion which had been cut by the political opposition from the $220 Billion Budget.
While admitting that the support of the joint opposition would be needed in relation to the no-confidence motion, Nagamootoo said that this reaction came as a result of that financial violation.
READY FOR ELECTIONS, BUT…
On this matter, the President in a self-assured tone, commented on remarks emanating from the Diplomatic community that the lack of Local Government Elections is tantamount to undermining the democracy of the nation.
The President said, “I too want to have elections as early as possible, there is no resistance on my part…but as you would have read in the news where I would have spoken on issues of nationalistic interest, I would have said that there are uncertainties in the body politic.”
“I do not agree with this idea that is being pumped in (to the nation) that the lack of local government elections is undermining democracy. What undermines democracy is when you listen to everybody’s telephone calls and read their emails and ban them from having collective bargaining in their own country in different parts of North America and Europe. And local government services still exist. We are always ready to have it,” Ramotar concluded.
