A security guard appeared in the city court yesterday, accused of plotting the transport of cocaine-stuffed ochroes to the
United States in concert with an import and export dealer who was last year jailed for drug trafficking.
Caleb Caesar was arrested on Monday and charged with conspiracy to trafficking narcotics.
He was apprehended by investigators who have been working to finger those involved in the 2013 bust involving 33 pounds of cocaine – carrying a street value of G$13.5M – concealed in 99 boxes of ochroes.
Yesterday, almost one year after the bust, Caesar stood before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry accused of conspiring with Handrick Cummings to traffic exactly 15.055 kilograms of cocaine, between April 1 and August 13, 2013, at Kingston.
Police Prosecutor Corporal Bharat Mangru explained that Cummings was intercepted on August 12, last year, with the cocaine stuffed in ochroes that were packed in boxes destined for a Bronx, New York address.
Subsequent to the discovery, import and export business owner 26-year-old Handrick Cummings of John Street, Campbellville, was arrested at the airport and charged for drug trafficking.
Cummings was brought before the courts and sentenced to five years in jail and fined $40.5 million after he pleaded guilty.
Mangru stated that during the investigation, Cummings disclosed that he orchestrated the shipment along with the accused. Cummings reportedly explained to investigators that he had met with Caesar on the seawall and they planned the delivery. Caesar, the Prosecution said, had funded the shipment.
The Corporal said that Caesar was arrested on Monday and cautioned. A confrontation was subsequently held between the two men. Mangru noted that despite Caesar’s denial during the confrontation, Cummings insisted that he was involved in the plot. Further investigations led to the charge being instituted against Caesar.
Objecting to bail, the Prosecution stated that no special reason was raised by the accused for him to be granted bail. Bail was refused and Caesar will appear for another hearing on July 10 before Magistrate Fabayo Azore.
