A salesman attached to the Beharry Group of Companies is nursing gunshot wounds about his body at a private hospital after being attacked and robbed of an undisclosed amount of cash by a lone gunman yesterday.
Mahendranauth Persaud, 48, of Park Street, Enterprise, East Coast Demerara (ECD) was shot to the jaw and foot around 09:30 hrs in front of a grocery store at Better Hope, East Coast Demerara.
Up to press time he was hospitalised at a private institution’s Male Surgical Ward in a stable condition.
According to information reaching this newspaper, Persaud and a porter, Netran Manbodh, entered the grocery store belonging to 62-year-old Surudai Singh to take orders, after parking the company’s vehicle (GMM 6970).
“Singh ordered macaroni and chowmein. She told them to bring that while she looked around to see if she had to get anything else. The porter went to the van to get the items and Persaud was standing at the gate,” a source close to the investigation told Kaieteur News.
The source added that the elderly shop owner reportedly told investigators that she was in her shop when she heard someone saying, “Oh sk#@t, dat is all de money meh got,” after which she heard two gunshots.
When she looked outside, she saw Persaud clutching his left foot while blood was running down his face.
She did not see who had shot Persaud.
Meanwhile, the injured man told investigators that while standing at the gate, the gunman approached him and demanded valuables. He first handed over his personal cash $100,000 and a US$50 along with his cell phone, but the assailant demanded more.
“He (Persaud) said that he (shooter) shot him twice and then carried him to the van where he was forced to hand over an undisclosed amount of cash belonging to the company,” the source said.
While the robbery was taking place, Manbodh, the porter, who was scared for his life, ran away. The gunshots attracted several persons, who rushed to the scene. A member of the area’s Community Policing Group assisted in taking the wounded man to the hospital.
Kaieteur News understands that the police recovered two 9mm spent shells and a live 9mm round at the scene.
