Friendship Secondary School defied a spirited first half attack by Dora Secondary School and staged a remarkable comeback to first equalize the situation before clinching victory by the penalty route 3-1 when action in the Digicel Schools Football Championships continued at the Hauraruni Community Centre Ground, Linden/Soesdyke Highway, yesterday afternoon.
Indeed, the lads from Dora Secondary distinguished themselves in the first session with a display that convinced the smattering of spectators that they were the better unit. The lads from Friendship started aggressively and peppered the Dora custodian, Jamal dos Santos, from the onset but the latter individual, with an acrobatic display between the uprights, denied them several opportunities that looked like sure goals from the time they were struck.
The determination of the Dora strike force was underlined when Rondell Heywood collected a pinpoint cross and delivered a stinging right foot kick in the 37th minute, mere seconds before the half time whistle sounded for the end of the truncated first session, due to a late start.
Heywood upped the ante promptly at the start of the second session when he successfully dribbled to the opposition’s goal. However, with just the goalkeeper to contend with, the hard working striker over-chucked the ball and ruined his chances down the right side of the goal.
It proved to be his undoing as the opposition came to life and Naphtali Joseph, a petite striker that appeared to be of little significance, broke away from the bunch and sent in a powerful shot that breached the opposition’s defense in the 63rd minute.
Thereafter, the battle intensified with both teams muffing clear cut chances and though Friendship Secondary seemed to have experienced a resurgence of energy, they were unable to break the stalemate and the final whistle meant the two teams had to revert to a penalty shootout to determine the winner.
Even this session provided some tension as Dora missed the first two chances while Friendship conceded their first attempt. The former institution then blundered with two other attempts while the latter sunk their final three to stage a really heroic comeback and advance to the next round.
Meanwhile, over at the Betterverwagting Community Centre ground, Institute of Business Education enjoyed a field day and humbled Shivitas Business College 25-0 in a totally one sided affair.
Jason Cromwell led with a seven goal haul (10, 13, 19, 35, 60, 70, 71) while Shemar Scott supported with successes in the 1st, 14th, 27th, 28th and 72nd minute. Isiah Holder (12, 22, 24, 36), Seon Singh (62, 69, 73), Teshawn Gordon (51, 67), Colin Liverpool (29), Oder Abrams (49) Shamar Gonsalves (50),) and Deshawn Trotz (75) completed the onslaught.
