It was a case of goalkeeping blunders and questionable refereeing decisions, but in the end defending Region 6 champions New Amsterdam Technical Institute (NATI) defeated Berbice Educational Institute (BEI) 2-1 yesterday as play in the 4th Annual Digicel Schools Football Championships continued at Skeldon Community Centre ground.
On target for the winners were Rayon Emmanuel who netted in the 53rd minute and Anthony Weekes in the 66th. Duel Hall’s 58th minute strike had leveled the game briefly, before Weekes’ goal restored NATI’s advantage and subsequent win.
The win means that NATI remains on course to defend their title won last year. The game which was played in soggy conditions caused by heavy rainfall saw the players struggle to exhibit their true potential, but the sprinkling of fans still got a glimpse of the immense talent that they possess.
From the start both teams went at each other in toe to toe style with the smaller stature BEI team giving as much as they received and even looked the more skillful and purposeful of the two combatants, but robust defending by the NATI backline nullified their promising buildups.
The half came with no team managing to enter the score sheet.
On the resumption, NATI using their superior physical strength and speed started to impose their will, but poor finishing in the attacking third kept the contest even.
However, they eventually took the lead through a goalkeeping mistake committed by BEI’s Omari Bentham, who failed to grasp a curling corner kick and the ball fell into the path of an unmarked Emmanuel, who headed home for the first goal of the game.
Not to be outdone, BEI responded quickly, five minutes later to be exact and it came through a similar mistake when the opposing custodian failed to clear a floated free kick and the ball fell at the feet of a lurking Hall stationed at the far post, he tapped it in from close range to level the scores.
The winning goal came four minutes from full time when Weekes, who had missed a few clear opportunities to score made amends when he took full advantage of a ball that had eluded a diving Bentham from a low cross from the right side and being all alone just swept it into an empty goal.
Many, however, felt that at least three players were in an off-side position, but the referee thought otherwise and NATI withstood a series of threatening raids before the final whistle sounded giving them the chance to advance further into the competition.
Play in the Zone continues today with Central Corentyne taking on Tutorial Academy at Scotsburg ground, commencing from 15:30 hrs.
