Dear Editor,
As the President of the North Essequibo Cricket Committee I had formally written to both the Essequibo and Guyana Cricket Board to launch an investigation into the conduct of one of its executive members. I did so after receiving complaints that the Essequibo under-15 Coach had acted irresponsibly and recklessly by demanding some of the under-15 players at the time to catch cricket balls after turning off the lights during one evening.
Cricket is not similar to a karate contest where blind-folding may form part of the training for a fight or are the players bats and owls to see in the dark. He was also alleged to have been under the influence of alcohol and threatened them. Sure the aggrieved players were traumatized, since they could also have been injured. Is this not insane conduct?
This incident occurred in 2013 when the players were encamped at the Essequibo Hostel in preparation for the inter-county tournament. I was also informed that the GCB received a letter of complaint from a parent. Further the said Coach it was also alleged, knowingly facilitated the playing of an over aged player in the competition.
The player is related to him and was selected for the national team. He however had to be withdrawn from the squad after the discovery was made.
Astonishingly neither the ECB nor the GCB cared to launch an investigation. Instead I was banned by the ECB for seeking an investigation. In fact the President and Secretary of the GCB were at the meeting and actively participated in having me silenced. I will not be deterred however from continuing to expose these undesirable acts as well as to protect the interest of my constituent.
My main contention in this scenario though, is that the individual is unfit and disqualifies himself from being a coach of the ECB, particularly having to coach minors.
Instead he should have been suspended. Such maligned conduct is totally unacceptable.
Interestingly what the ECB instead has done was to promote him, since he is now the appointed Coach of the Essequibo under-17 squad. I can only conclude therefore that the GCB and ECB are condoning executive indiscretions by their members. It is therefore not an illusion as to how the two Boards are functioning. They are doing so with impunity and total disregard for good governance. They are also sullying the good image of the sport if not the career of the players. What next for the GCB and ECB?
