Training starts Friday at Camp Seweyo
The Guyana Boxing Association (GBA) has partnered with the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) to host the first extended
boxing encampment in over a decade with the commencement of the one-month exercise at Camp Seweyo on the Linden/ Soesdyke Highway from Friday, June 27.
According to GBA President Steve Ninvalle, the boxers are being prepared for two major tournaments and emphasized that no boxing team has been exposed to such a lengthy preparation in recent times.
Twelve boxers and four officials will travel to Region 10 and according to Ninvalle they represent the best collection of senior fighters from Berbice, Essequibo and Georgetown.
The camp is geared at providing the best possible work-out, without as much distractions because of the remote location of the Army Camp and Ninvalle thanked the GDF for providing the encampment venue.
The squad is preparing for the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland from July 23 to August 3 and the CAC qualifiers from August 6 in Colombia. Ninvalle said the GBA wished to thank the GDF and Chief-of-Staff, Brigadier Mark Phillips for seeing the need to support this National cause.
“We need this kind of partnership for us (GBA) to realize our true potential” the GBA top man told Kaieteur Sports yesterday.
The Boxers from the Ancient county are Travis Fraser, Michael April and Tyrone Lashley while the names of those from Essequibo and the city will be announced today.
The four officials are Terrence Poole who is the tournament Director of GBA, Sebert Blake, Francisco Roldan and National Boxing Coach Wincell Thomas.
The last time this Country participated in an International Boxing competition their three-man team copped two gold medals and a silver medal in St. Lucia last March month end. (Sean Devers)
