The United States didn’t get off to a great start against Portugal, but the Americans game roaring back after conceding in the opening five minutes. Michael Bradley missed a golden opportunity in the second half, as his shot was cleared off the line by the knee of Ricardo Costa, but Jermaine Jones drew the United States level with the best goal of his life.
In the 64th minute, Jones fired a rocket to the far post. Portuguese goalkeeper Beto was screened from the shot, and didn’t have time to dive for it.
Jozy Altidore, who was forced to miss the game recovering from his hamstring injury, was fired up after Jones’ wondergoal.
Knowing that they could clinch a spot in the knockout round with a win, the Americans kept pushing for a second goal. Clint Dempsey delivered in the 81st.
Michael Bradley’s shot from the center of the box was deflected, but Graham Zusi collected it and sent a cross back in front of goal. Dempsey was there, unmarked, and deflected the ball in with his hip.
Cristiano Ronaldo, who had a miserable game for 94 minutes, finally showed up for Portugal in the final minute of stoppage time. He sent an inch-perfect cross into the United States penalty area, and Varela beat Tim Howard to break American hearts.
