A post- mortem examination performed on the body of Corriverton pedestrian Satesh ‘Ravi’ Ramdass, 30, revealed that he died of a fractured spine, perforated liver, broken ribs and fractured skull. His legs and jaw were also broken.
Government Pathologist, Dr. Vivekanand Brijmohan performed the autopsy at the Skeldon Hospital.
Ramdass, of Number 72 Village, was allegedly struck down on Tuesday night by 46- year- old Christendeo Deo of Lot 15 Line Path, Corriverton, while driving motor- pick up GHH 7827, heading along the eastern side of the road, to Skeldon.
Reports indicate that Deo drove for a further 136 feet before stopping. Ramdass was lying face down and was rushed to the Skeldon Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Deo was subsequently released on station bail on Wednesday. Ramdass’ family is outraged at this new development.
“We are not comfortable about this…a man can’t kill somebody and he was not even placed in the lock- ups—he was placed on the bench for the night and he was released the following day,” stated Raj Ramdass.
“Nobody from his family even came and sympathized—you know, just like an animal, he hit down and gone his way. They told us that the file will be sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) and they will instruct whether to charge the man or not, but we don’t feel anything will come out of this.”
The family is also outraged that a breathalyzer test was reportedly not performed on the accused driver. “We requested the Traffic Inspector, Sgt. December, to do a breathalyzer test and he told us that there is no breathalyzer kit at Springlands Police Station. The next morning when they took the guy out to measure the road and so, the driver was sober— but the very night of the accident, he could not even sign his name.”
Meanwhile the dead driver’s children, Chris, 12, Rahul, six and six-month- old Avinash are under the care of Ramdass’ uncle Eno Bharrat.
Ramdass will be buried on Sunday at 15:00 hrs at Number 78 Village Cemetery. (Leon Suseran)
