returned to these shores a successful unit after representation at the JKA/WF America Karate Camp and Goodwill Tournament held in Panama City, Panama on June 3 – 7, last.
The training camp was held between June 5 – 7 with the team required to train three times daily; it was conducted by Master Shojiro Koyama – 8th Dan, assisted by Sensei Yasuaki Nagatomo – 6th Dan, both of the USA and Sensei Arturo Worrell – 6th Dan of Panama.
The sessions sparked interest among the attendees which allowed for growth, deep insight and technical applications to several aspects of JKA karate.
Representing Guyana at the Regional Heads Meeting was Chief Instructor of Guyana Sensei Christopher Chaves who took the opportunity to weigh in on the discussions which would contribute to the future development and direction of JKA karate.
On tournament day, the participating countries included USA, Costa Rica, Mexico, Guyana and host Panama and was held at the Panama Canal Authority Sport Center.
The Guyanese didn’t fail to deliver and collectively secured – 4 Gold, 1 sliver and 3 bronze medals. Young adult female Kissandra Pitt from Craig EBD Dojo won gold in Kata and Kumite open Purple to Brown belt division.
Maxene Joseph of GGMC secured silver in Kumite and Bronze in Kata. Teenage female Loren Black earned her place at the top securing gold medals in Kata and Kumite (girls 12-14 years-old).
Camiel Melville (boys 10-11 years-old) Brown belt category won bronze medals for Kata and Kumite in this division.
This surely wasn’t the end of the Guyanese accomplishment; Sensei Christopher Chaves underwent his Dan Rank test conducted by Master Koyama and was successful thereby being promoted to Godan Rank (5th Dan) becoming one of the youngest JKA members to achieve such a high ranking.
Overall, the team did well and made a lasting impression representing Guyana with pride. The respective Manager and Assistant Manager of the Guyana team were Mrs. Lyndell Danzie-Black and Mrs. Resel Melville.
Supporters, members and family were all thanked for their unflinching support and encouragement to the Guyana team.
Meanwhile, JKA/WF Guyana is now in preparation for their July 12 Grading examination to be held at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall.
