30 students of the Little Diamond International Martial Arts Academy (LDIMAA)
were elevated to higher levels when that institution held a workshop and grading examination over the past week.
Twenty five of those students between 6-15 yrs from three branches of the LDIMAA also competed in a National Junior Karate Championship at the Parfaite Harmony Dojo WBD and were successful. They competed in three divisions; 6-9, 10-12 and 13-15, and were tested in three events, traditional kata, weapon forms and Kumite (sparring).
Enmore topped the medal haul winning 6 gold, 4 silver and 5 bronze medals. That club also had 1 grand champion. Wales fielded 6 students and won 12 medals after producing 2 grand champions with 7 gold, one silver and 2 bronze medals. Four students represented Parfaite Harmony and procured a gold medal along with 5 silvers. Six years old practitioner, Arianna Etwaroo excelled in Kumite.
Michael Prescott of Enmore was crowned grand champion after winning 3 gold medals in the 13–15 division, while Christian Freeman (8) and Joshua Bascombe (12) of Wales were crowded grand champions in the 6 – 9 and 10-12 division respectively. Vickash Somwaru also received a special award for his outstanding performance in the tournament.
Shihan Nazim lauded the efforts of those instructors that worked with the students even as he noted the improved performances of the students. Those practitioners would now commence preparations for the annual training camp from July 20-27 next followed by the 2nd edition of the International Martial Arts/Karate Championship in August. Subsequently, a team would leave for Suriname for a tournament scheduled for September 7.
Meanwhile, the management of the Vreed-en-Hoop branch of Red Cherry Fast Food had acquiesced to exclusive sponsorship of the tournament and the organizers have expressed their gratitude for such chivalry.
