Guyanese International Radio Cricket Commentator Sean Devers is the latest casualty from the Guyana Cricket Administration
Bill which was recently passed in Parliament and is awaiting the signature of President Donald Ramotar to come into Law.
Devers, who made his International debut as a Radio broadcaster in the Test involving West Indies and South Africa at Bourda in 2001, has been replaced on the Radio team for the third Test, originally scheduled for Guyana, by a Barbadian Commentator.
The WICB moved the game to Barbados because of the passing of the ‘Bill’ which among other things gives the Guyana Sports Minister the right to appoint a Cricket Ombudsman. The WICB and the ICC does not tolerate Government’s interference in Cricket.
Devers is a former Guyana Cricketer and a Cancer survivor. He expressed disappointment in not being able to commentate on home soil as he makes his Radio come back after undergoing Brain surgery.
Devers, who covered the second Test in Trinidad last week, explained that because the match was moved to Barbados, the cost for his air-ticket, Hotel accommodation and meals for the duration of the Test match went from zero to almost G$300,000 (US$1,500).
“I was informed that the Barbados Radio Station requested another local voice resulting in me being replaced. I am really disappointed, since in addition to losing payment for the match in US dollars, I was looking forward to working on radio at home. I am a proud Guyanese and I always promote my country whenever I am on Radio,” Devers added.
”I am down to do commentary in the Bangladesh Test in St Vincent in September. But doing a game in Guyana after being out for over two and a half years due to my illness would have been a big moment for me,” said Devers.
The Kaieteur News Sports Journalist, who has been banned from commentary on the State owned NCN Radio since 2006 for writing an article lamenting NCN’s inability to acquire sponsorship to broadcast the inaugural T20 World Cup, feels the problem could have been solved in a better way without Government getting involved.
”Guyana is a Sovereign Country with its own laws but the GCB is the only entity with the authority to control cricket in Guyana, not the Government. Those who make a living from cricket will be the ones to suffer if this problem is not solved quickly. I have faith in God who saved my life and I Know he will open other doors for me,” Devers concluded.
