– Charity also advance
By Rawle Welch
Diminutive Cotton Field striker Hosea Peters slammed in five goals to lead his
team into the next round on the 4th Annual Digicel Schools Football Competition which was played last Friday, at the Charity ground on the Essequibo Coast.
Playing against Eight of May, Peters, who seemed error prone at the start of the game, suddenly changed gear after netting his first in the 33rd minute after which he proceeded to score four more goals in the 55th, 63rd, 70th and 75th minutes of play to complete a 6-2 rout of their opponents.
Earlier, Eight of May had taken the lead through D’Angelo Pitman, who silenced the partisan crowd poking the ball into an empty goal following a scrimmage off a corner that saw goalkeeper and defensive line scrambling to clear the ball, but failing to do so.
That goal came as early as the 2nd minute.
Urged on by their vociferous band of supporters, Cotton Field made a few threatening expeditions into the Eight of May half, but the opposition held firm, denying them repeatedly to maintain their advantage.
However, Cotton Field gained the equalizer in dramatic fashion when a powerfully struck clearance from central defender Joshua Jones crashed into the chest of a clearly surprised Eight of May goalkeeper, before landing at the feet of a lurking Rafael Cook, who nonchalantly fired in from close range in the 10th minute.
After that both teams made several searching incursions, but time and again the backline was equal to the task, shutting down the danger every time.
However, the deadlock was broke in the 33rd minute and it came through a magical piece of play.
Operating on the right wing, Peters broke down the side line, weaving past a host of defenders in the process exhibiting exceptional skill, before cutting inside and squeezing his shot past the goalkeeper stationed on the near post.
Eight of May was not done and leveled the proceedings two minutes later through the pint-sized Ronsville O’Neal who had looked lively all afternoon.
He collected a pass on the left flank and eased past one tackle, before unleashing a powerful right-footer that sailed over the jumping Cotton Field goalkeeper, before landing into the far corner.
However, that signaled the start of the Peters show as he wormed and weaved his way past the opposing defence with consummate ease en route to four more goals to seal the win for his team and set up a mouthwatering clash against Aurora today after they beat Abrams Zuil 4-1 on Thursday.
In the opening game, hosts Charity romped to a 3-0 win over Wakapoa with an own goal (29th) and a brace from Richard Correia (31st and 34th) accounting for their tally.
They moved on to face NOC in the other game of today’s double header, at the NOC ground.
Meanwhile, all the schools were presented with bag packs compliments of sponsor Digicel and Company Representative Darrell Yearwood acted on its behalf.
