A fire said to be electrical in origin on Thursday morning destroyed a section of the Port
Mourant Ophthalmology Hospital causing millions of dollars in damages.
A unit of the Rose Hall Fire service responded quickly and with the help of public-spirited citizens managed to quell the blaze and avoid a catastrophe. However, equipment and a section of the roof were damaged.
The fire reportedly resulted from one of the surgical equipment in the hospital which apparently overheated. At the time, the area was experiencing a power failure.
Upon arrival the fire fighters got to work and immediately took charge of the situation. The building was evacuated with everyone being taken to safety and to ensure that they were safe; after which they proceeded to prevent the fire from spreading. No one was injured and investigation is continuing.
The Port Mourant Ophthalmology Hospital in Berbice was specially renovated to care for specialized eye care treatment. It is mostly staffed by Cuban doctors and technical staff who are specialized in eye care. The section that was destroyed is the main operating centre of the hospital.
According to a source, the Guyana Fire Service received a call around 06:35 hrs and responded with two units, one each from the Rose Hall and the New Amsterdam Fire stations.
Upon arrival they noticed that the entire Building was engulfed in smoke. The firemen encountered some initial difficulties and took some time to get into the building. The place was dark due to the power outage, the smoke and the dark glass windows on the building. Toxic fumes were emanating from the machine, making the situation dangerous.
The firemen had to work through the difficulties and brought the situation under control.
During the time of the fire a number of persons were at the hospital for surgery. They were safely evacuated.
A source also said that the machine was working extensively and may have overheated thus, catching a fire and causing a feedback in the system, blacking out the area around 04:30 hrs following an explosion to the transformer in the area. Shortly after, fire was seen running on a wire leading to the building.
The Regional Chairman and other officials were at the scene assessing the damage and trying to ascertain what other emergency arrangement could be put in place.
