Even with more frequent searches and heightened surveillance at the New Amsterdam Prisons a number of illegal items are still being found within the precincts of the Penitentiary.
After finding a number of illegal items on Saturday, police again raided the prisons on Tuesday and conducted another search. Again they found a quantity of illegal items, including five cell phones, cell phone batteries, cellphone chargers, two SIM cards, Juckers, metal spoons, a quantity of playing cards, smoking utensils, a tattoo machine, a quantity of wire, two speakers, leather and canvas belts, DVD motors, one nail clip, 59 grams of cannabis, a quantity of cigarettes and a large number of cigarette lighters.
The cops have expressed alarm at the frequency and ease with which the items would find their way in the prison. Lighters seemed to be a common thing in the jail as over two dozen was found. One was even found on a prisoner who was recently charged with setting fire to the prison.
That same day a prisoner who was due to be released soon, was nabbed with eight grams of marijuana around 14:00hrs after he had returned from working on the prison farm.
According to information, prisoner Norde Deodat, 40, of Cotton Tree, West Coast Berbice, who is serving an 18-month jail term for break and enter and larceny was among a group of prisoners working on the farm that day. He had just returned to the prison when a check of his person revealed a transparent plastic bag with a quantity of leaves, seeds and stems, of the illegal substance concealed in his shirt pocket.
Around 19:30 hrs, Tuesday, even as the police had just left the compound, prison authorities conducting routine search of the compound found some 120 grams of leaves, seeds and stems of the illegal substance concealed in a transparent plastic in a section of male block. The police were informed and investigation is continuing in all the matters.
On June 14, last, notorious criminal Tameshwar Khemraj, called “Rambo”, 27, of Lot 171 Nigg, Corentyne, Berbice, was stabbed about his body following an altercation with two brothers and an uncle. ‘Rambo’ remains in a critical condition in the New Amsterdam Hospital.
On Friday May 23, four notorious bandits were brutally chopped and burnt with acid after they were attacked by a rival gang.
Injured were Davendra “Bara’’ Harricharran, Abdussalam “Sato” Azimullah, Kwame Bhagwandin, and Clarence “Wild Hog Williams.
