The Rotary Club of Georgetown successfully hosted a day of sports for persons with
disability recently at Thirst Park. Some 900 male and female athletes from disabled homes across Guyana took part in 30 track and field events with each of them receiving prizes.
Past president of the club Afeez Khan told Kaieteur Sport that athletes from the event will be selected shortly for training under Sports Officer of the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport Wilton Spencer with the possibility of participating in Paralympics and Special Olympics. Khan informed that the event will be held every two years and they hope to host several Caribbean territories in the next event.
He added that Guyana is the only country in the Caribbean that promotes sports for persons with disabilities and singled out president of the club Harry Parmesar for special mention.
East Bank special needs, Lions School for Children with special needs, Ptolemy Rehabilitation Centre, Guyana society for the blind, Ruimveldt parent support group, Linden Centre for the Handicap, St. Rose’s visually impaired, Arch Achievers, Open Door Centre, Differently Abled Athletic Club, Region Two CBR, Region Three CBR, East Bank CBR, West Coast Berbice CBR, East Berbice CBR and Kuru Kuru Achilles track club were represented at the meet.
Khan expressed gratitude to Minister of Sport Dr. Frank Anthony who declared the sports open, King’s Jewellery, Ralph Persaud, Banks DIH, Bacchus and Sons, Bounty Farm, Rahaman, Lall Beharry Poultry Farm, Digicel, Republic Bank, NBIC, Friendship gas station, Shoppers Paradise and Food for the Poor for their input.
