Half centuries for Renee, Paul
By Zaheer Mohamed
Demerara romped to a 10-wicket victory over defending champions Essequibo in the
opening round of the Guyana Cricket Board Inter County U-17 50-over tournament yesterday.
Essequibo were bowled out for 106 after they were inserted by Demerara at the Enmore Community Centre ground.
The Essequibo batsmen, with the exception of Kemo Paul, failed to apply themselves as medium pacer Sherfene Rutherford and skipper Travis Persaud shared six wickets between them on a two paced track.
The home team’s openers, Ronaldo Renee and Raymond Perez, batted sensibly to ensure their team attained victory without loss.
The visitors lost the wicket of Nathan Persaud (03) in the second over with the score on five, but Paul and Mark Williams steadied the innings with a second wicket stand of 46. Paul gradually grew in confidence and punched medium pacer Samuel McKenzie through cover before driving leg spinner Ershad Ali for four, while Williams, who played the supporting role, caressed Ewart Samuels to the point boundary as Essequibo looked set for a challenging total. Williams then played down the wrong line to one that came back from outside off stump from Ali and was bowled for six.
Off spinner Malcolm Hubbard then uprooted the stumps of Sachin Persaud (03) with the score on 68, to initiate the collapse. Siddiq Mohamed (00) made a lazy attempt to get back into his crease after he was sent back by Paul and was run out without addition to the score.
Paul, the only batsman that made it into double figures, hoisted Hubbard over the mid wicket fence
and soon reached his fifty off 72 balls with two fours and one six before he was given out to a low catch at first slip off Persaud at 84-5 who also removed Jonathan Fernandes (01) one run later. Beesham Dasrath (00) nicked a short delivery to wicketkeeper Judell McAlister from Sherfene Rutherford before Persaud trapped Miguel Jones (01) in front. Rutherford then wrapped up the innings with the wickets of Akini Adams (07) and Christopher Latchana (00) leaving Kevin Martinborough not out on nine as Essequibo were bowled out in 34.1 overs. Rutherford captured 3-7 off 3.1 overs, Persaud 3-14 from five, while Mc Kenzie, Ali and Hubbard had one each.
Essequibo new ball bowler Paul, despite generating a fair degree of pace, was wayward at first, delivering 10 wides in his first three overs and his decision to go round the wicket hardly helped. Renee drove him for two fours in his third over also took boundaries off Martinborough. He and fellow opener Perez, who was dropped at first slip off Paul, survived a few nervous moments off left arm spinner Adams as they went to lunch with the score on 68.
Adams bowled beautifully and could have gotten the wickets of both openers had their fielding been a bit sharper. Renee cut Paul to the point boundary to bring up his fifty off 59 balls with seven fours and ended unbeaten on 65 (8×4), while Perez finished not out on 19 (1×4) as Demerara ended on 107 in 19 overs.
The competition continues today with Essequibo facing Berbice at Wales.
