Despite the current football landscape being saturated with commentary and scenes from the World Cup in Brazil, the local scenario is beginning to be inundated with the excitement of the Digicel Schools Football Competition which continues today with six matches at various venues.
At Uitvlugt, Uitvlugt host Zeeburg in a Region 3 Zone clash, while Bladen Hall takes on Lancaster in a Region 4 Zone encounter, at the Victoria Community Centre ground on the East Coast of Demerara.
At Timehri, Soesdyke and Electra Institute square off in another Region 4 matchup at the Timehri Red ground, starting 15:30 hrs, while Wisburg engages Mackenzie High at home.
In Georgetown, St. George’s fourth placed finishers in last year’s tournament will open up against Dolphin at the Ministry of Education ground, while at the Police Sports Club ground, Eve Leary, St. Mary’s and New Campbellville battle for a place in the next round.
Defending champions Christianburg /Wismar Secondary, Xenon Academy and Queenstown Secondary School have advanced to the next round following wins over Linden Foundation, Supply and Freeburg respectively.
At stake in this year’s tournament is $1M for the winning school, while second, third and fourth placed finishers receive $600,000, $400,000 and $250,000.
Regional winners will receive $100,000 to go towards a school project, while all teams making it to the quarterfinals, including players, coach and teacher will each pocket Smartphones compliments of Digicel.
