– Just over $2million more needed
With the North America and Caribbean Rugby Association (NACRA) confirming its intention to absorb a sizeable chunk of the estimated $8million budgeted to get the regional champions to Atlanta, USA to take on USA South for the overall NACRA title, the act has made the work of the Guyana Rugby Football Union (GRFU) to solicit funding for the trip much easier.
President of the GRFU Peter Green (right) seen speaking at the Press Briefing on Monday in the presence of Executive member Mike McCormack.
The GRFU during a Press briefing on Monday at the Guyana Olympic Association Head Office on High Street, Kingston had revealed to the media that a total cost in the vicinity of $8 million was required to get the team to the USA and because the Union financial coffers was in the ‘red’ the only hope for participation was if they received substantial assistance from the Government and the corporate sector, but as was eventually disclosed at the Briefing, Parent Body NACRA in communication with the Union authenticated its willingness to bear most of the cost associated with the team’s travel to the USA.
Guyana won the right to face the USA South for the NACRA Men’s 15’s title after defeating Trinidad and Tobago 15-8 in the final of the Northern Zone at the National Park in Guyana, while the USA South beat the Cayman Islands 34-30 to capture the Southern Zone crown.
The Briefing had in attendance President of the Union Peter Green and executive members Mike McCormack and Roger Perreira.
Green in his remarks gave an outline of the cost of sending the team to the USA, whole Perreira confirmed the assistance that being given by NACRA.
Green when quizzed on where the balance will come from to complete the total cost to send the team said the Union going to solicit support from the Government and corporate community to ensure that the team gets to the USA.
“Following our win over T&T, the confidence of the players is at a high. Their training is intense and Guyana has jumped to number 53 on the International Rugby Board (IRB) rankings and we at the GRFU don’t intend to slow down as there is much more hurdles to cross. “We saw the Government assist powerlifting and basketball, to which I wish them all the best. However, rugby’s track record is tried and proven over the years and can be deemed elite, so we are in need of his help at this time,” Green said.
However, with quite a few players needing visas to travel and the game fast approaching, Green said if the US Embassy cannot facilitate an early date for those without visas to get an interview, he will be asking NACRA and USA South to defer the date for the match to a later time.
