Crash Water escaped elimination with a clinical 4-1 thrashing of Wowetta Premier Conquerors as the North Rupununi first division football championship continued at the Rupertee Sports Ground.
A helmet-trick from Shivraj Lall (12, 56, 60, 78) spearheaded a determined Crash Water display as they trounced a lackluster Wowetta Premier Conquerors team which now faces elimination with two defeats in two matches with two more games still to play.
Wowetta’s lone goal came off the boot of Orien Francis in the 65th minute. In the only female match of the day, Three Hills defeated Annai United 1-0 compliments of a 2nd minute goal by Murisa Vanlong. Annai United tried valiantly to equalize but the experienced Three Hills back four defended stoutly to ensure that the home team opened their campaign on a winning note.
Despite the defeat, Annai United have still qualified for the semifinals and will await the results of the other female preliminary matches to know who they will be playing in the semis.
The feature match between home male team Three Hills and Kwatamang lived up to the hype and expectation as a cagey and closely fought encounter ended in a 1-1 draw. Garville Daniels opened the scoring for Three Hills in the 4th minute against the run of play, much to the delight of the huge home crowd, but Kwatamang equalized in the 27th minute courtesy of a penalty by Kensman Cambridge after he was brought down in the box.
Despite some clear cut chances from both teams in the second half, neither of the teams was able to break the deadlock at the final whistle.
The action continues at Aranaputa Sports Ground on Saturday from 09:30hrs with Annai United males taking on Net Rockers in a crucial match for both teams. Net Rockers and Bina Hill Institute female teams will try to pick up their first points of the tournament after both sides lost their opening games respectively.
Crashwater will have their backs against the wall as they try and pull off an upset against defending champions Surama F.C. from 13:30hrs after which home team Basin FC will face Splashing Stars from 15:30hrs.
