Carlos Costa, a 22-year-old Brazilian miner, appeared yesterday before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry at
the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court to answer to fraud and conspiracy charges.
The first charge stated that Costa on June 16 at Ogle, East Coast Demerara, with intent to defraud, uttered to Police Constable Douglas, his Brazilian Passport #FG38058938 with material insertion of one false immigration entry and departure stamp in order that it be used as genuine, despite knowing same to be false.
The other charge read that he conspired with person(s) unknown to forge two Guyana Immigration stamps in his passport purporting to show same was issued at Moleson Creek, again knowing same to be false.
Speaking through an interpreter from the Brazilian Embassy, Costa said that he was guilty and that he did not know what else he should’ve said because he knew that he did something wrong.
Prosecuting, Corporal Bharat Mangru stated that the facts in the matter are as charged. The accused was represented by Attorney Patrice Henry.
The lawyer said that his client has been legally engaged in the mining industry for quite some time.
Henry urged the court to consider that his client was a first-time offender who did not waste the court’s time. He asked that the Magistrate exercise discretion and impose a noncustodial sentence.
Responding, the Chief Magistrate fined Costa $75,000 with an alternate three months imprisonment on each charge. He opted to pay the fine.
