The President and Executive of the Berbice Cricket Board (BCB) have congratulated Guyana Captain and middle order batsman Leon Johnson on his recent selection to the West Indies Senior Test team.
In a statement, the Board said, it was always confident that it was just a matter of time that Johnson would have made the senior Test team following his One Day debut a few years ago. The BCB said that the Board follows the career of all cricketers from the junior level and was always impressed with the attitude and commitment shown by Johnson. The only thing that might be lacking in Johnson’s cricket was consistency in his batting, something that he overcame recently. He is also a decent leg spinner.
The Board encourages Johnson to not only be in the team but to perform well enough to remain in the team and enjoy a remarkable career. All the young players will be watching Johnson and he can provide the inspiration for others.
Apart from Chanderpaul and Sarwan not many other Guyanese players have been able to maintain their place in the West Indies Senior team for a long period of time. It is our hope that Johnson will and others will follow.
The Board said that the cupboard is not empty and with proper administration, cricket in Guyana will rise again.
