Dear Editor,
This is in response to Barrington Braithwaite’s personality driven diatribes against me and his persistent attack against the Indian High Commission (IHC) and Indians in general (KN Jun 16).
Braithwaite failed to address the salient issues I addressed in a response to his atatck on India and IHC (May 31), and instead has inserted unrelated issues like polling, pathological racism, etc. to the discussion on the issue. Instead of answering my queries about scholarships, Braithwaite, as is his norm now, engages in name calling. For him, every Indian is a racist once he or she speaks of sufferings during the PNC ethnic dictatorship or counter his pathological racist driven agenda.
Braithwaite, and those of his ilk, can’t engage in an intellectual discussion devoid of innuendoes and personality driven attacks. Braithwaite is downright nasty in remarks about Indians. He thrives on racist epithets against Indians, Chinese and other ethnic groups.
Braithwaite penned glowing tributes to the Burnham dictatorship. These will not erase memories of the sufferings of Guyanese during the era of the ethnic dictatorship – Braithwaite and his family were accorded exclusive treatment during the dictatorship. They did not have to line up for toilet paper, soap, cooking oil, gasoline, kerosene, gas and other basic needs and they did not have to fetch buckets of water daily for a half mile journey.
They did not have to suffer from denial of roti, alou, dhal, ghee, channa, onion, garlic, spices, religious paraphernalia, etc. They did not have to worry about being denied the right to vote; in fact, Braithwaite and family joined Burnham and cast ballots for others. It is, therefore, not surprising that for him, Guyana was not a dictatorship under the PNC. But the masses know better.
Braithwaite objects to a scholarship (from the Indian government) for a person of Indian descent to pursue studies in India. Mind you, India has been giving dozens of scholarships annually to Guyana and one is set aside for an Indo-Guyanese. Braithwaite is angry about it and attacks the Indian government for giving one of its descendants a scholarship.
Instead of penning a respected complaint to the IHC objecting to a scholarship being given to an Indo-Guyanese, Braithwaite has gone on the attack with public ridicule of India. Notice that neither the IHC nor me has responded in kind to his ranting.
Readers await Braithwaite’s response to the following queries – how many scholarships have African countries given to students from Guyana from 1965 thru 2014? Of these, how many were granted to Portuguese Guyanese, Chinese, Indian and Amerindian Guyanese? Can Braithwaite explain why few Indians were chosen by the PNC ethnic dictatorship (1965 thru 1992) for scholarships?
The record would show that the Indian government granted hundreds of scholarships to the Guyana government between 1965 and 1992 but only a handful were given to Indians. Can Braithwaite explain why?
In his writings, Braithwaite has demonstrated a certain mindset about the IHC, India and Indians in the diaspora and nothing that anyone pens seem to have any impact on altering that racist view. He disrespects the IHC.
