The Preliminary Inquiry (PI) into the death of a 55-year-old housewife, whose bound body was found in her yard in
Agricola earlier this year, has commenced at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court, and the mother of the accused and the victim’s husband were among the four persons who have testified.
Abiola Jacobs, a former rank of the Guyana Defence Force, is charged with the murder of Donna Taylor at Lot 16-17 Agricola, East Bank Demerara, on January 31, last.
The mother of four was reportedly found with her hands bound behind her back, a slit throat, and a piece of cloth wrapped around her neck.
Taylor was said to have been attacked in her bed around 23:00 hrs on the day in question and slain after she was dragged to her backyard. The other occupant of the rented upper flat, Samantha Sabat, was subsequently found lying unconscious in the front yard.
Sabat, the British-based citizen was a guest of the Taylors, who reportedly escaped by removing the panes from her bedroom window and jumping to the ground from the top flat of the two-storey structure.
A neighbour and the victim’s son found Donna Taylor’s body, with hands bound behind her back, in her backyard.
A post mortem later conducted showed that she suffered blunt trauma to the head, as well as injuries to the neck and other parts of the body. Death was due to shock and hemorrhage.
The army rank who was the girlfriend of one of Taylor’s sons was apprehended after Sabat, who survived the attack, fingered her as one of the individuals who forced their way into the residence and launched an attack on them.
Jacobs was first brought before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry on February 5 for Taylor’s murder. She is being represented by Attorney Adrian Thompson and prosecuted by Corporal Bharat Mangru.
The PI commenced on Monday and the daughter of the deceased, Marcel Collymore, and her husband Charles were the
first to take the stand.
At yesterday’s hearing, the mother of the accused, Gwendolyn Younge, as well as Bertrand Taylor Sr. also testified in the pretrial matter. The PI is scheduled to continue today in the said court room. A total of 15 witnesses are expected to testify.
