An unpainted concrete structure which was meant to be an abattoir is yet to be used some
12 years after it was constructed at Shatters Land, Meten-Meer-Zorg, West Coast Demerara. Kaieteur News understands that at the level of the Regional Democratic Council (RDC) discussions are ongoing for the construction of a new abattoir.
Regional Councillor Harry Narine Deokinanan said that after notice was given during a Council meeting for the construction of a new abattoir, he became aware that an unused slaughter house was already available. During visits to the community, he said that residents told him that the facility was never commissioned or used.
Deokinanan said that residents, especially meat vendors, explained that they normally slaughter the animals on their properties, with the approval of the Guyana Livestock Development Authority (GLDA) which inspects and certifies their facilities.
Regional Chairman Julius Faerber told Kaieteur News yesterday that the abattoir was constructed during the tenure of the former Regional Chairman, but it was never fully furnished and never got off the ground.
He said that plans are not to build a new abattoir, but feasibility studies are ongoing to see whether the old abattoir could be upgraded.
Kaieteur News was unable to ascertain the cost of the project.
