– victim died of haemorrhage and shock due to stab wounds …jugular veins and wind pipe were severed
The caution statement of murder accused, Quasion Jones was yesterday presented to the court, where he is on trial for killing a fish vendor, in the vicinity of Meadow Bank, East Bank Demerara.
The victim, Marlon Greene, was reportedly stabbed several times during a heated argument on January17, 2011.
Jones, called “Blondie,” is on trial before Justice Navindra Singh and a mixed 12-member jury. He is being represented by Attorney- at -Law, George Thomas.
Yesterday, State Prosecutrix, Judith Gildharie-Mursalin, called Police witness, Corporal Hubert Henry to the stand. He told the court that he procured a caution statement from the accused on January 19, 2011, after the latter came to the station in the presence of his Attorney.
The statement was read aloud to the court.
Corporal Henry told the court that he had visited the scene of the crime after the incident and saw what appeared to be blood at the southern side of the road. The officer said that he checked the area for the suspect but he could not be found.
Henry later examined the body of the victim at the Georgetown Public Hospital Mortuary.
Government Pathologist, Dr. Nehaul Singh told the court yesterday, that the victim died as a result of haemorrhage and shock due to stab wounds.
He said that both the victim’s jugular veins and wind pipe were severed. He succumbed half an hour later.
The doctor recounted that the body bore an incised wound at the neck which may have been inflicted by a sharp pointed object.
On Wednesday, three eyewitnesses testified in the matter. The witnesses were businessman Steven Vieira, a resident of Meadow Bank, his daughter Michelle Vieira and brother of the deceased, Rondell Singh.
The businessman told the court that he had known both the victim and the accused for a number of years. He said that although they were not related, he treated Greene as if he were a member of his family.
Vieira recalled that on the day in question, he looked out his window and saw the accused and the victim fighting. He claimed that he saw “Blondie,” pull a knife and start to stab Greene.
The witness said that he shouted and ran from his house to where the men were, in an effort to stop the fight. However, before he got there, Greene was already wounded. He said that the wounded man was quickly hoisted into a vehicle and taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
Michelle Vieira said that she heard a loud argument and saw what appeared to be a fight between Blondie and her cousin (Greene).
“I see Blondie and my cousin and my brother André look like he trying to part them… I see Blondie hands moving up and down. At the time, I thought Blondie was cuffing Marlon because I was running towards them.”
She said that when she got close enough, she noticed that Blondie had a long knife in his hands. The knife had what appeared to be blood on it.
“Marlon was lying on the road, on the left side of his neck had a hole, blood was pouring out of it.”
The victim’s brother, Rondell Singh, claimed that he also tried to separate the two men. “When I push Blondie he turn to me and say watch how yuh mek I kill he. Then he left and run straight at the back at the wharf and get away.”
On Thursday, Andre Vieira told the court that he was cleaning fish with the victim on the day that he was stabbed. He said that Greene was working along with him, but had left to buy cigarettes. He said that he tried to intervene after he heard Greene and Blondie arguing.
Vieira said that he saw the accused stab the victim several times. He claimed that the two men had a misunderstanding two days prior to the incident.
