Speaking directly to the resignation of his colleague Pastor Ronald McGarrell from the Guyana Responsible Parenthood
Association (GRPA) following comments against gay lifestyles, Pastor Wendell Jeffrey has condemned any acts to stifle free discussions on the growing topic of homosexuality.
Pastor Jeffrey who is the founder of the Practical Christianity Ministries and an established ex-offender rehabilitator, said that his colleague’s resignation was based on mounting pressure from some members of the organization.
He is adamant that moves to remove the Pastor from the organization based on his belief are most unbecoming.
Pastor McGarrell, on a radio programme, ‘Hard Talk’, suggested that those persons with alternative life styles (members of the GLBTI community) should go live on an island by themselves in a bid to save other persons from the wrath of God.
“Though it was not the best of statements to make, for indeed if one were to separate sinners by islands, then there would need be islands for gossipers, fornicators, corrupt politicians, gangster pastors, hypocrites, etc.”
Pastor Jeffrey said, “McGarrell’s forced removal from the GRPA’s Board was warranted.”
“I understand the GRPA is a parenting body but as yet, does not represent the rights of same sex parents here in Guyana. Neither does it represent, by mandate, the platform of the Society against Sexual Orientation Discrimination (SASOD). Neither was Pastor McGarrell representing GRPA when he spoke.”
“How then was GRPA so quick to force Pastor McGarrell off its Board?”Jeffrey questioned. “What is the real issue? Is it that they fear a reprisal from their donor agencies or potential donor agencies? Is it that the voice of SASOD is so loud that the freedom of speech in Guyana is now under threat? Or is it that spiritual leaders – for fear of being politically incorrect – are quick to throw each other under the bus?”
Jeffrey questioned the relentless desire to silence any dissenting voice on the issue of homosexuality before mentioning that for years Pastor McGarrell has hosted family enrichment programmes and has been at the forefront of seeking ways to improve family life in Guyana.
“I am a proud recipient of a family life certificate from Pastor McGarrell’s organization and so are hundreds of other persons here in Guyana.”
“I do not as yet know in what capacity GRPA has taken up this fight against the Pastor, but once I began to understand that they were going to make it a subject of their Board meeting, I had expected and indeed would have preferred that Pastor McGarrell be reprimanded for his comments.”
“But for a man of Pastor McGarrell’s reputation and stature in our society to be so easily and nonchalantly forced off of the Board of Guyana Responsible Parenthood Association, would suggest to me that the Board did not act responsibly after all.”
McGarrell came under fire last week after he spoke out publicly against the acts of homosexuality. He told this publication that he was merely trying to get the populace to understand the repercussions of such lifestyles and the negative impact it has on family life, the continuance of the descendants and life itself.
The Pastor while making reference to the Holy Scriptures explained the seriousness of such immoral dwellings according to the Bible.
It was noted in another section of the media that Junior Finance Minister Bishop Juan Edghill when invited to the said talk show, supported discussions against gay lifestyles, deeming the act destructive and should not be tolerated.
Homosexuality is a growing topic in Guyana and it is also making waves across the region since pressure from proposed democratic world powers have pledged support for people of alternate sexual preferences to have that right, with special privileges being put in place for them.
The local gay advocacy body, Society against Sexual Orientation Discrimination (SASOD), is seeking to have laws against cross-dressing and buggery repealed.
