A West Bank Berbice family remains fearful after a horrible encounter with three men who claimed to be Customs Officers attached to the Guyana Revenue Authority (GRA) and who recently fleeced them of jewelry, cash and other merchandise totaling in excess of $500,000.
The three men swooped down on the home of Kamaldeo ‘Raco’ Itwaru and his family at Ithaca Village, claiming that they were looking for contraband goods.
Itwaru’s wife Dhanmautie, operates a small business at home where she sells cakes, snacks, and bottled non- alcoholic beverages.
She is also a market vendor who sells coconuts and salt fish.
Last week Itwaru was not at home but his wife recalled that three men, one dressed with a long sleeve short and a pair of black trousers along with another in a short sleeve shirt and similar pants entered her yard.
They all had ‘ID badges’ from GRA.
“They had another one with them and he had on a three-quarter pants and a T-shirt and he hair plat,” she added.
The men proceeded to search the entire home.
“They say they searching for contraband goods and tumbling up everywhere,”
The woman observed a car was waiting for the men; a similar vehicle that she saw parked a short distance away from her home a few weeks ago.
“When they leaving, they pick up some jam, nut butter an couple other fine, fine things and put it in a box and gone. And den the three ah dem walk out and gone in the car,” the woman told Kaieteur News.
“I can’t say is how much money because one week before we cremate my mother and that was the money that left back… And they carry way about $5,000 shop money that I had downstairs.”
The men also carted off jewelry from her home that day.
After they left the shop owner reported the matter at the Blairmont Police Station, but the men have not been seen since.
