Team Cocoa’s capped a fine weekend of racing when Raynauth Jeffrey successfully defended his Castrol sponsored Father’s Day 55-Mile Cycle Raod Race senior title on the West Demerara yesterday morning.
Castrol’s Junior Rampersaud (centre) and race officials pose with recipients of prizes following yesterday’s presentation.
Jeffrey, who led a one/two finish ahead of teammate Hamza Eastman, lowered last year’s winning time (1hr 55mins 31 secs) by stopping the clock at One Hour 55 Minutes 17 Seconds in a comfortable performance.
Marlon ‘Fishy’ Williams crossed the line behind Eastman followed by winner of the junior category, Akeem Arthur of the Linden Bauxite Flyers Cycle Club, Robin Persaud and Junior Niles.
Jeffrey sprinted away with four of the eight primes, Eastman captured two, while there was one each for Persaud and Hinds.
Some 49 riders faced starter’s orders in the various categories which saw new winners emerging other than the senior.
Arthur finished ahead of fellow Lindener Michael Anthony and Stephan Husbands in that order.
Berbician Wasim Hasnoo is the new winner of the veteran category, crossing the line just ahead of Davendra Ramnarine and last year’s winner, Talim Shaw.
Topping the field in the Mountain Bike category was the consistent Ozia Macullay who actually defeated the veteran top three. Second to Macullay was Lennon Dick who piped Emanuel Gayraul on the line in an exciting battle.
Tashwanna Doris was the female to contest the race while Montgomery ‘Monty’ Parris was the top over-60 competitor.
Yesterday’s event pedaled off from the Wales Police Station, West Bank Demerara with the senior and junior competitors going all the way to Bushy Park on the East Bank of Essequibo before returning to the Demerara Harbour Bridge for the finish.
Veterans, mountain bike and female riders turned back at Uitvlugt, West Coast Demerara before ending at the Harbour Bridge. Representing Castrol at the presentation of cash prizes and trophies was Junior Rampersaud, Lubes Bay Supervisor.
