Eighteen Year-old Albion all rounder Sharaz Ramcharran is one of the most talented young cricketers in the Ancient
County of Berbice. Born on October 29, 1995, Ramcharran who hails from Chesney started to play cricket as an eleven year old after he was encouraged by friends. He first represented Berbice in the U-15 inter county tournament before gaining selection on the national team in 2011. He got selected on the national U-17 team after performing creditably in the 2012 inter county tournament.
In the Regional U-15 competition, Ramcharran picked up 14 wickets with his best being eight wickets in the match against Barbados and made a highest score of 43 versus the Windward Islands.
The right hander who represented his county for the past three years at the U-19 level and captained the Berbice in 2014 and helped his club to victory over Rose Hall Town Youth and Sports Club in a recent Berbice Cricket Board one day final with an unbeaten 45; his best bowling to date at the first division level is 4-18 against Port Mourant.
Ramcharran’s captaincy was admired by many in the 2014 tournament. He motivated his team well and was able to get the best out his players. He also did well with both bat and ball as Berbice won two of their three matches in the three day format.
One of his most outstanding performances was 4-10 and 60 not out versus the President’s XI. Ramcharran said that he enjoyed being at the helm of his county team. “The support I got from the players took away the pressure from the captaincy, this actually helped us to win a lot of games,” he added.
Ramcharran hopes he has done enough to get into the Guyana U-19 team for this year’s Regional tournament. “My goal is to first represent my country at the junior levels then I will focus on the senior team. I hope to get into the national youth team this year and help my country win the tournament,” he stated.
Ramcharran also has his sights on representing the West Indies at the highest and knows achieving that feat is not an easy task by any means. “Success at any level does not come easily; I practice six times a week and do gym training as well. I have got a lot of support from my family and I want to make my community proud,” he said.
Ramcharran attended the Port Mourant Secondary School and apart from being a cricketer he wants to study Mechanical Engineering. He admitted that he didn’t live up to expectations in school, but feels he has the capacity to excel in academics. “Education is very important and I have to balance that with my cricket. There are some slow learners while there are others who learn quickly, but I always adopt a positive attitude where my Education is concerned and I will further my studies at the Mort Mourant Training Centre shortly”, he informed.
He believes Education plays an important role in helping youths to achieve their goals in sports. “Education should always be taken seriously because it helps to develop rounded individuals,” he added. Ramcharran indicated that he wants to be a positive role model for younger players.
