Chaos reigned at the New Amsterdam Prisons yesterday when a notorious prisoner was brutally stabbed and chopped by
three of his fellow inmates.
As Tameshwar Khemraj, called “Rambo, 27, of Nigg Settlement, Corentyne was about to step out of his cell around midday, yesterday, he was attacked by the prisoners who were armed with cutlasses and an ice- pick.
Prison officers witnessed the entire incident and rushed to stop what was going on, but Khemraj was already injured. The entire institution was immediately put on lock down and the three suspects restrained and placed in seclusion. Khemraj was rushed to the New Amsterdam Hospital where he is in a critical state.
There is no known motive for the attack. Khemraj had been serving a five-year sentence for several offences. He was also before the court for a number of matters, including the Rose Hall Town $10M robbery.
He was nabbed on April 29, last, when he turned up at the Albion Magistrate’s Court for the matter that has landed him in jail. At the time of his recent arrest he had six grams of cannabis in his pocket.
The 27-year-old was considered one of the most notorious bandits in Berbice.
Yesterday, the man’s common law wife, Shameeza Alli, 19, said, “One of he friends called me and tell me he get stab up and he at hospital.
“He head, chest and one of the lungs collapse and he get chopped on he foot. That’s what the nurses tell me,” she stated.
“Three of them were waiting for him and as soon as he stepped out of the cell attacked him in the presence of the prison officers,” she added.
His relatives, including his parents, were furious at the security levels at the prison and are calling for a thorough investigation.
This is the second such attack at the correctional facility within the past month. On May 23 last, Davendra Harricharran, called ‘Bara’, 27, of Nigg Squatting Area, Corentyne, Berbice; Quammy Bhagwandin, 32, of Angoy’s Avenue, New Amsterdam; Clarence Williams, called ‘Wild Hog’, 41, of Angoy’s Avenue; and Adbussulum Azimullah, called ‘Sato’, 31, of Hampshire Corentyne, Berbice were all involved in another brutal attack involving cutlasses and acid.
Investigations into that incident are still ongoing. (Leon Suseran)
