With Guyana preparing to do Caricom Basketball Championship duty in this year’s tournament, Statistician
Charwayne Walker has been looking at the previous showing by Guyana in the tournament. Today he looks at the Guyana men’s team performance in the 1996 tournament staged in Trinidad.
Guyana playing under the Captaincy of Ravens maestro Lugard Mohan reached the Semi-finals of the 13th Caricom Championship in Trinidad in 1996.
Guyana contested eight matches losing four and winning four. The land of Many Waters campaign started with an emphatic victory against Barbados at the Jean Pierre Complex. Guyana won 84 to 78, Skipper Lugard Mohan led from the front with a game high 22 pts, (Centre) Lorenzo Withrite supported Mohan with 18 pts, while the flambouyant Remington Ram finished with 17 pts. For Barbados Andrew Alleyne scored 16 pts, Ryan Holford 15 pts and Nigel Lloyd 10 pts.
Game No.2, Guyana blew out Regional Powerhouse Bahamas 104 to 76, Lugard Mohan 17 pts, Wayne Bristol 17 pts, Lorenzo Withrite 16 pts, Remington Ram 12 pts and Lancelot Loncke 12 pts led the Guyanese. For Bahamas Scott Forbes scored a game high 26 pts, Vincent Knowles 18 pts and Michael Wilson 10 pts.
Game No. 3 Guyana lost to host Trinidad and Tobago at the St. Paul’s Gymnasium 111 to 88. Wayne Bristol scored 14 pts, Lugard Mohan 13 pts, Remington Ram 13 pts, 8 Rebounds Robert Cadogan 11 pts and Lancelot Loncke 12 pts. For Trinidad Barry Sandy hit seven threes in a game high 28 pts, Portugal base Pro Bertrand Brisbane scored 24 pts and Beville Taitt 22 pts.
Game No. Four, Guyana lost to Jamaica 105 to 98, Skipper Lugard Mohan had 19 pts, Lorenzo Withrite 14 pts and Steven Nurse 14 pts. For Jamaica former N.B.A star Andrew Kennedy 35 pts and Rumeal Robinson 15 pts.
Game No. 5, Guyana destroyed St. Lucia 102 to 93 at the St. Paul’s Gymnasium, Rawlwin Loncke 15 pts, Lorenzo Withrite 14 pts, Orin Mohan 12 pts, Dane Kendall 12 pts, Remington Ram 10 pts and Lancelot Loncke 10 pts 8 Rebound. For St. Lucia, I. Browne scored a game high 19 pts.
Game No. 6, Guyana humbled Dominica, who playing with 7ft 2 inch Centre, Garth Joseph, lost 86 to 71 at the St. Paul’s Gymnasium. Guyana were led by Wayne Bristol 23 pts, Lorenzo Withrite 22 pts 8 Rebounds and Lancelot Loncke 16 pts 6 Rebounds.
Game No. 7 Semi-Finals at St. Paul’s Gymnasium, Guyana lost to Jamaica 100 to 97. Centre Lorenzo Withrite 27 pts 7 Rebounds, Wayne Bristol 23 pts, Lugard Mohan 20 pts and Lancelot Loncke 9 Rebounds. For Jamaica former N.B.A guard Rumeal Robinson scored 27 pts, Andrew Kennedy 19 pts 6 rebounds.
Game No. 8, Guyana lost Third place game to Bahamas 133 to 120 at the Jean Pierre Complex. Lugard Mohan 22 pts, Rawlwin Loncke 22 pts, Remington Ram 18 pts and Lorenzo Withrite 16 pts were the top shots. For Bahamas Scott Forbes 29 pts, L. Collie 25 pts, R. Pierre 23pts, Michael Wilson 22 pts and R. Pinder 18 pts led their cause.
Both Skipper Lugard Mohan and Centre Lorenzo Withrite aggregated over 100 pts. Guyana were also the only team with two set of brothers on display. The Lonckes, Rawlwin and Lancelot and the Mohans, Lugard and Orin.

Jamaica won the 1996 Caricom Championship defeating host Trinidad and Tobago in finals 86 to 78. Former N.B.A Guard Rumeal Robinson 40 pts and Ricky Parkes 17 pts for the winners, while for Trinidad, Bertrund Brisbane scored 22 pts, Beville Taitt 16 pts and Derek James 12 pts.
