After spending three days as a remanded prisoner, the Cadet Officer accused of shooting a 16-year-old boy in his mouth was
yesterday released on bail.
Subsequent to a failed application at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court, the attorneys of Cadet Officer Franz Paul moved to submit a bail application before Chief Justice Ian Chang at the Georgetown Supreme Court.
Franz of Lot 159 Freeman Street, East La Penitence was released on a total of $725,000 court bond.
Following a six-week probe, Paul along with Police Corporal Baichan Singh, was taken before Magistrate Fabayo Azore on Tuesday to face several charges which stemmed from the incident with the boy who was fifteen years- old at the time.
Cadet Officer Paul, the lawman believed to have pulled the trigger, faced a total of four charges.
Paul was accused of discharging a loaded firearm at Alex Griffith on April 30, last, in Georgetown with intention to maim, disable, disfigure or cause grievous bodily harm .
It is also alleged that he unlawfully and maliciously inflicted grievous bodily harm as well as assaulted the teen.
He and Corporal Singh, 31, were charged for conspiring with each other, on May 1, at Georgetown to pervert the course of justice.
Both men at the first court hearing pleaded not guilty to the charges and submitted bail applications through their lawyers.
The case was prosecuted by Inspector Stephen Telford.
In response to the charge for attempting to pervert the course of justice, both lawmen were granted $150,000 bail. Magistrate Azore had also granted Paul bail on the common assault charge to the tune of $75,000.
She had, however, denied the Cadet Officer bail for the inflicting grievous bodily harm and discharging a loaded firearm with intent allegations.
The teen was being held in police custody when the shooting occurred.
On April 30, last, Singh’s sister was robbed and he took her to the police station to make a formal report of the incident. Based on information received, Griffith who was 15 at the time was arrested by a party of police headed by Paul.
It was during the process that the Cadet Officer placed a firearm in the teen’s mouth and shot him. The victim, he said, was taken to the hospital by Paul where he was admitted as a patient.
A report was made to the police and an investigation was launched.
During the investigations whilst Paul was under close arrest, Corporal Singh took the Mahaica Police Station Firearms and Ammunition book to him for him to alter the entries therein.
Investigations were completed and legal advice was sought and the charges instituted against the two lawmen.
The case will be called again on June 30.
