Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of a miner who reportedly drowned while crossing a
Creek at Aranka Backdam on Tuesday.
The dead man has been identified as 21 year- old Andrew Griffith called “Tulley,” of Lot 27 Belfield East Coast Demerara. Griffith reportedly drowned as he attempted to swim across the creek, which serves as a main waterway in the district.
His mother Connie Mc Almont explained to this publication that her son was heading out of the area after she sent him news that his sister was ill.
“His younger sister was sick bad and I send word that he should come home. I aint know what going on but according to what the police tell me …My son and about five other men from his worksite were heading to the landing in the area to make a report concerning an issue they had with their boss.”
The woman said that she learnt of her son’s demise days after the incident.
“I understand that they had to swim across a creek …about six of them were coming out after their boss man refuse to pay them and apparently they tried to swim across, but my son catch cramp or something and he didn’t make it.”
Mc Almont said that she has since identified her son’s body which is at Ezekiel Funeral Home, West Coast of Demerara.
“His body already start to decompose… my son left and spent four months in the bush with he bossman, and he boss aint even had the decency to send a message to say that my son dead,” the grieving mother said yesterday.
Griffith leaves to mourn his mother and five siblings.
