A 31-year-old man was yesterday charged before a senior city Magistrate for allegedly killing his reputed wife. The woman,
whose body, with head partly submerged in a bucket of water, was found outside the couple’s Friendship, East Bank Demerara home a few days ago.
Navendra Seeram appeared before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court to answer a charge of murdering Shelly Ann Persaud between June 9 and June 10, last at Friendship, East Bank Demerara.
Seeram, who trembled throughout the court hearing, was not called upon to respond to the charge since it was laid indictably.
He is being represented by Defence Attorney Kevon Bess.
The Prosecution, which was spearheaded by Corporal Bharat Mangru stated that investigations are ongoing and could conclude in three weeks.
According to Mangru, the Prosecution has nine witnesses thus far.
Persaud, a housewife and mother of three, was on Tuesday found at the bottom of the back stairs of the couple’s Lot 34 Friendship residence.
At the time of her discovery, her head was in a five-gallon bucket that contained water.
According to reports, the couple’s eight-year-old daughter had told relatives that she heard her parents arguing some time Saturday night.
The child reportedly also claimed to have seen her father beating her mother and pulling her hair while saying, “Tonight is the last night you will see your mother.”
Following the discovery of the woman’s body a report was made by the family to the police. Subsequent investigations led to
Seeram being taken into custody and charged for his wife’s murder.
He was remanded to prison and the case will be called again on July 4 for report and fixture.
