Members of the boxing fraternity were thrown into grief just under one week ago following the death of Treasurer of the Guyana Boxing Board of Control (GBBC) and qualified judge, Clairmonte DeSouza who succumbed to the Lymphoma disease. He was 59 years old.
DeSouza was employed for the better part of 20 years at Banks DIH Ltd as the Trisco Warehouse Manager and despite being a strict disciplinarian, was an individual of quiet disposition. His colleague, Trevor Nero said that he was a humble individual and led a private life. Mr. Nero said that though he knew that he was afflicted by the disease, Clairmonte worked diligently at the firm.
Clairmonte was also a judge and his last assignment occurred at Mackenzie Sports Club last December when he officiated in the Shondell Parks/Shelly ‘Boom’ Gibson heavyweight encounter. From a personal perspective, Clairmonte was a humble individual who took great pride in his job as a boxing judge. He hated controversy and often called me after I would have published a report on a fight of which he was a part, to clarify any issue that might lend a wrong impression of the bout. He was also quick to accept when he blundered.
Former Secretary of the Guyana Boxing Board of Control, Trevor Arno, extended his sympathy to the wife and family of DeSouza. He said that DeSouza had given yeoman service to the boxing community ever since he served as an executive under the stewardship of President (GBBC), K D Persaud. He became the Assistant Secretary/Treasurer in 2011 and then the Treasurer last year.
President of the GBBC, Peter Abdool said that boxing would be much the poorer devoid of DeSouza’s input. He said that the deceased had indeed given yeoman service to the fraternity and would be sorely missed. The GBBC wishes to express deepest sympathy to DeSouza’s wife and children.
Clairmonte is survived by his wife, Margaret, three children, Garfield, Gail Ann and Gavin and one grandson. His wife told Kaieteur Sport that he will be buried next Tuesday while a wake will be held at his West Ruimveldt residence on Sunday and Monday evening. Kaieteur Sport wishes to extend heartfelt condolences to the wife, children, other family and all affected by his death. May his soul rest in eternal peace! (Michael Benjamin)
