Giving back to society and in this instance Guyana’s sportsmen are a major pillar in the makeup of Fitness Express, according to Manager/Owner, Jamie Mc Donald.
The entity, located at 47 John and Sheriff Streets, Campbellville on Tuesday last committed to athletes, Paul Adams and Karel Mars who will be representing the Golden Arrowhead at the 2014 Caribbean Powerlifting Championships slated for St. Croix, US Virgin Islands, July 7 – 14.
Mc Donald handed over his company’s contribution to Paul Adams who would be competing in the 74kg Men Open category and would be seeking to capitalize on the absence of former 2012 World Masters as well as 2013 Caribbean Open 74kg Champion Winston Stoby by staking a claim for the gold medal ahead of teammate Osmond Mack, Edwin Alma (Puerto Rico) and Michael Jack (T&T).
The other athlete benefitting from Fitness Express’ largesse, Karel Mars will seek glory in the 105kg class but will have to overcome old rivals Adrian Browne of Trinidad and Tobago and Ramon Burgos of Puerto Rico.
Ever since its return to competitive powerlifting at the Caribbean level, Guyana has established itself as one of the top countries at this level as well as the Pan American, Commonwealth and World levels.
The likes of Winston Stoby, ‘Big’ John Edwards, and Dawn Barker have all been standouts and respected competitors at these levels; the new generation of lifters is seeking to maintain this reputation.
The Guyana team: Paul Adams (74kg), Osmond Mack (74kg), Germain Snagg (83kg), Erwyn Smith (83kg), Marino Jeffrey (93kg) and Karel Mars (105kg). The females are Kimberley Mars-Loncke (84kg) and Chittra Ramlochan (72kg).
