The Campbellville Post Office was yesterday robbed of $1.3 Million by an armed bandit around 8:35 hours.
Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the Guyana Post Office Corporation Telesha Whyte said that the gunman entered the post office like any other person conducting business would.
However, soon after his intentions were made clear when he brandished his weapon, kicked open the door leading to the unauthorized areas that housed monies kept by the office and the path leading to the Postmaster’s office, and proceeded to rob the office.
According to the PRO, members of the Guyana Police Force (GPF) were summoned and investigations were launched into the robbery.
She said that whenever the office is in need of money, security personnel would bring it. She said that the post office corporation also has a police escort as well but didn’t want to elaborate further on the financing of the institution since, according to Whyte, “Apparently persons are monitoring us.”
She did not know if the money that was stolen was in the safe which is housed within the office or if it had been outside when the bandit robbed the premises.
The PRO could not say how the robber apparently knew that the Post Office was receiving money, if the robbery was premeditated, or if the bandit acted ignorant of that fact.
According to Whyte, “We have been putting security measures in place. Definitely we are going to have this office on our radar. We have our security but most obviously that would have to be increased.”
Taking what transpired yesterday into context, the Public Relations Officer was asked if security for the other post offices would be increased. She said they are working on that.
The Campbellville Post Office remained closed and it won’t be opened until the police have completed their investigations. Persons are being asked to use the other offices within town such as the Bourda Post Office, the Head Office, and the Kitty Post Office.
None of the employees were injured physically but the PRO said that they ensure that their employees receive counseling in cases like this “because this experience has been a traumatic one. Imagine somebody putting a gun to your head.”
Meanwhile, the police have sent out a release informing that the suspect was armed with a handgun. He held up the Postmaster and Staff. The release also confirmed that the bandit took $1.3M and escaped on a waiting motor cycle. Investigations are continuing.
