A Venezuelan woman who was recently taken before the courts and formally charged for overstaying in Guyana, has been fined.
Liliana Rodriquez appeared at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court and was indicted before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry.
The charge which was read to Rodriquez detailed that between April 16 and May 10 at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport (CJIA), she failed to comply with conditions granted for her to stay in Guyana.
Speaking through Interpreter Corporal Peters, attached to Customs and Immigrations, the woman stated that she had believed that she was granted three months’ stay and not three weeks.
Prosecutor Bharat Mangru stated that facts were as charged in the matter and Magistrate Sewnarine-Beharry thereafter offered the Venezuelan two options: to either pay a $30,000 fine or be subjected to two weeks’ imprisonment.
Rodriquez opted to pay the said fine.
