Dear Editor,
I have been following the general coverage, including that of your newspaper, relating to the cricket impasse and the ultimate removal of the third Test match scheduled for Guyana later this month between the West Indies Cricket Team and New Zealand.
Allow me to note that in your Tuesday, June 3, 2014, edition, you provided coverage on page 26 of a press release from the Honourable Minister of Culture, Youth & Sport, Dr. Frank Anthony.
In the same edition you carried another story captioned, “Did the Government snub the WICB President?-The Sports Minister should make his response public”, on page 31.
With regards to the Minister’s response you sought, if it is the letter he sent to the President of the West Indies Cricket Board Inc., Mr. David Cameron, please note that the Government Information Agency (GINA) sent a similar letter along with the press release mentioned above via the usual email to the Kaieteur News.
Having read your page 31 story in the June 03, 2014, edition, GINA, on the said day, resent the Minister’s letter mentioned to the Kaieteur News. To date, no mention/reference to said letter has been noted in your subsequent editions.
Also, I would like to note that GINA, via the same email, disseminated a story attributed to Dr. Rupert Roopnaraine from A Partnership for National Unity (APNU), on June 3, 2014.
That article, captioned, “In light of match removal from Guyana…Dr. Roopnaraine challenges WICB to show where in Cricket Bill is Gov’t given power over GCB”, noted Dr. Roopnarine’s position, and I would want to believe that of APNU, on the Cricket Administration Bill which was passed on May 15, 2014, with the support of his Party.
It is not my intention to restate the content of the GINA bulletin mentioned. However, it must be noted that Dr. Roopnaraine is reported to have said that the action taken by the WICB is ridiculous and he believes that the WICB is grinding an axe, either its own or someone else’s.
In addition, on page 31 of the June 03, 2014, edition, the Kaieteur News carried what appears to be in its entirety, a press release from the Alliance For Change (AFC) in which the government was castigated for the position it took regarding the Cricket Administration Bill.
One would expect that in the context of fair and unbiased reporting, the positions taken by the major stakeholders would have been given, if not equal, some level of prominence in your papers especially being cognisant of the importance of cricket to Guyana and the Region.
The position which the Kaieteur News has seemingly adopted, not to in any way make mention of Dr. Roopnaraine’s sentiments on the removal of the third Test match in question from Guyana, gives additional credence to the belief of the newspaper’s propensity to report on stories that are unfavourable to the government.
If it is that you may claim to have not received the two documents, GINA can again make them available.
