Guyanese cyclist Geron Williams who has been training on the USA circuit since last year competed in
his toughest event to date this past weekend and placed 15th overall at the Saint Francis Tulsa Tough NCC Series, a three-day cycling festival in Tulsa, Oklahoma, USA.
Williams, who was the top Guyanese rider at the National Sports Commission Three-Stage race a few weeks ago, finished 8th on the first day in the McNellie’s Group Blue Dome Criterium; he placed 20th on day two and 21st on day three for an overall placing of 15th.
Speaking with Kaieteur Sport, Williams said that he was released by his current team, CRCA/FOUNDATION to ride with Champion System – Stan’s NoTubes Team (CS-SNT) as a guest racer for the weekend and it is believed that he is the first Guyanese to don the colours of a UCI Professional Team.
Williams commented on his experience gained over the weekend: “Being released by my current team “CRCA/FOUNDATION” to ride with Champion System – Stan’s NoTubes Team in the Tulsa Tough NCC series was a great experience. It was some of the most competitive races I have done for the entire year.
I really wanted to finish in the top 10 overall but had to settle for 15th after crashes in the last two laps on Sunday which pushed me back into midfield not allowing me to take a crack at the finish.”
The 23 year-old Williams noted that the experience was worth more than the places he got over the weekend.
“It’s always great racing among those guys, it is never easy but I give it everything I can everyday and hope that I stay upright throughout the chaos those races could present.”
Champion System – Stan’s NoTubes is a domestic professional cycling team based in New York City. The team specializes in criterium racing, with a specific focus on the National Criterium Calendar (NCC) and USA Crits.
Speaking on plans for the Commonwealth Games, Williams informed that everything is falling into place.
“I have a couple days off from racing, so during these days I am hoping to get in some specifics to be able to improve on some areas that I am weak in at the moment. Time is barely down upon me but it seems to be coming together slowly.
The Guyanese team to the Commonwealth Games (Alanzo Greaves, Marlon ‘Fishy’ Williams, Raynauth Jeffrey, Scott Savory, Geron Williams and lone female Claire Fraser-Green) while not having any plans to train as a unit before the games will have a few days together in Glasgow to get re-acquainted and to strategize.
Williams shared that it is not enough time but they are going to have to work with what they have.
“It is important for us to be together as a unit and I am hoping over those days that we will be able to create a bond that could be transferred into the Road Race where it is key.”
