Guyanese residing in the Virgin Islands got a rare opportunity to witness 2012 Olympian and 2014 Commonwealth Games bound Guyana sprinter, Adam Harris as he cruised to an impressive victory at the second annual BVI Twilight Invitational track and field event on Saturday evening.

Held at the A. O. Shirley Recreation Grounds on Tortola, the event attracted world-class sprinters from the United States and throughout the Caribbean, including Barbados, Jamaica, Antigua, St. Kitts and Nevis, and Trinidad and Tobago.
Racing for the first time in the Virgin Islands, Harris clocked 10.23 seconds, a shave under his 10.12 season’s best posted last month in Port-of-Spain, Trinidad. Brijresh Lawrence of St. Kitts and Nevis was second with a time of 10.38, while Ivory Williams of the USA earned third in 10.49.
Before arriving in the BVI, Harris broke the 10 seconds barrier for the first time in his career, posting 9.90 in Florida with a 4.5 wind measurement, which is above the 2.2 legal wind speed allowed by the IAAF.
Nonetheless, Harris is focused on getting better and is pleased with the BVI performance.
“I made sure that I focused on my race. I had to make sure I got out and stayed relax,” Harris said after the race.
Recognizing the Guyana supporters in the audience flying the Golden Arrow Head, Harris celebrated his victory in front the grandstand.
“I have been representing Guyana since 2008 and love to represent Guyana; my parents are from there. I was born in the U.S., but I just love it when I race for my country. Every time I represent I try to do my best. This year I have been doing pretty well so I am trying to put Guyana on the map. My focus this year is to get better and compete at the Commonwealth Games in July and hopefully coming home with a medal.”
Asked about his stay in the BVI, Harris replied, “The track here in the BVI is really not that bad; it’s a pretty nice turf. I didn’t know what to expect coming in since I haven’t been here before so coming out here and getting this win has been good. I wish I was able to stay here longer because I am looking through the brochures and seeing a lot of nice pictures of the beach, but I will not get to see it; I definitely have to come back.”
Before he returns to the BVI to get his feet wet, Harris will shift focus next week to the Nigeria racing circuit as he continues to prepare for the Commonwealth Games. (Gordon French/BVI Platinum News)
