The Number Two subdivision of the Guyana Police Force, which includes Ruimveldt and the East La Penitence Police Stations respectively, hosted 28 orphaned and abandoned children to a luncheon.
The children, residents of the Red Cross Children’s Convalescent Home, were treated to a luncheon and distribution programme.
The officers interacted with the children, some as young as two months to children around eight years old. There were some children with special needs but they sang nursery rhymes much to the delight of their peers and the little ones.
Afterwards the officers served lunch to the children and presented items such as pampers, toys, sweets and juices to the caretaker of the institution.
This initiative, according to inspector Beverly Wilson, is a part of the new strategic reformation of the Guyana Police Force.
She said, “Today, we are here to build our good community/police relationship. We have chosen here because it is a place for the less fortunate, the children who are without parents because those parents have abandoned them. We are here to show our appreciation to them.”
The officers said that to determine the items they asked what was needed and when a list was provided they supplied items from the list.
The inspector said that the two police stations have combined their resources to provide the charity for the home and they did this under the command of Deputy Superintendent Khali Pareshram.
The officers outlined that their programmes are ongoing and will see the Guyana Police Force giving back to the community on a continuous basis.
Caretaker of the home, Joan Stevens, expressed thanks to the officers on behalf of the home.
Meanwhile in keeping with their resolve to build good community police relationship the same officers were also at the Agricola Primary School to handover a sign to the school.
They had earlier contributed materials towards the building of a playground for the children.
Elders are set to benefit next week from hampers that the force will be distributing.
