Annai United demolished Splashing Stars of Yakarinta 9-0 when action in the North Rupununi Football Association (NRFA) division one championship continued at the Annai Sports ground.
Peter Parks opened the scoring for Annai United in the 6th minute with a long range strike which he drilled into the top right hand corner of the net.
Splashing Stars struggled to come to terms with Annai’s slick passing game but were still able to create some early chances which they failed to capitalize on. A strike in the 35th minute by Shawn Browne ensured that Annai doubled the advantage by the halfway mark.
Upon commencement of the second half, Annai ran riot as Peter Parks blasted the nets again in the 46th, 53rd, 61st and 75th minute to register a tournament high five goals which propelled him to the top of the goal scoring chart.
Shawn Browne scored his second of the match, a powerful left foot shot in the 81st minute and this was followed with a trademark power shot from beyond the area in the 83rd minute. Substitute Jason McRae got onto the score sheet as well with another long range strike in the 87th minute as the dispirited Splashing Stars team was ripped apart.
In results from the other matches on the day, Crashwater lost to Three Hills with Digicel’s Schools competition and Annai Secondary School’s 16 year-old Garville Daniels starring for the winners.
In a bruising and physical encounter Basin FC male team managed to hold on for a 2-2 draw against Net Rockers as both teams picked up a point each in their first game of the tournament. Lenny Moses put Net Rockers in the lead in the 28th minute with a superb strike from the edge of the eighteen yards box.
Shurland Davis was fastest to a loose ball in the penalty area to slot home in the 33rd minute to give Net Rockers a 2-0 lead. Basin FC found themselves in deeper trouble when Reynoldson Benjamin was shown a red card in the 36th minute for dissent.
But goals from Travis Franklin in the 41st minute and Ralfton Jacobus in the 73rd helped Basin FC to a hard fought draw.
In female competition, Annai United on account of a goal in the 23rd minute by Shannon Williams defeated Net Rockers.
In the tightly contested match, both teams played with purpose and determination but Annai United ended up deserved winners as they defended tightly to the end and was the fitter of the two teams in humid conditions. They now lead the point standings with six points from two matches with qualification to the semifinals already guaranteed.
Meanwhile, action now moves to Rupertee Sports Ground today where Crashwater male team will try to make a drastic turn around in fortunes when they on Wowetta Premier Conquerors who themselves have not picked up any points after a defeat in their only game of the tournament so far.
Another loss for Crashwater would mean early elimination from the tournament. In the only female match of the day Annai United will play their last preliminary match against last year’s losing finalist, Three Hills in a hotly anticipated grudge match.
In the feature match of the day, Three Hills male team will be depending on Garville Daniels to lead their forward line as they look to pick up their second win on the trot but will have to overcome the experienced Kwatamang team led by the commanding Zico Walcott Farias in defense and forward Kensman Cambridge.
