Dear Editor,
We are at a crucial juncture at it relates to the administration and development of basketball in Guyana. The stage is set for the very best overseas based Guyanese to arrive in Guyana between June 8th and June 21st to attend National Squad Basketball Practice at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall. Guyanese will have the opportunity to see world class basketball players who were born in Guyana or who are Guyanese by heritage – showcase their talents for selection to the National Basketball Team.
However, we have issues to resolve in putting Guyana First and respecting the statutes and responsibilities of the Guyana Amateur Basketball Federation (GABF):
We are now in the midst of preparing Guyana’s Men and Women’s Team for participation in the Caribbean Basketball Confederation 2014 Championships. At substantial costs through donors and patriotic Guyanese we have secured world class players to represent Guyana including former NBA player, Rawle Marshall and currently playing in European Professional League. Other top players coming to compete for a selection on the Guyana National Basketball team are Delroy James, Gordon Klaiber, Andre De Florimonte, Tyler Persaud, Steffon Farley and Keron McKenzie, among others – most of them professional basketball players. Guyanese giants in size and basketball skills will be invading Guyana during June 2014 to ensure Guyana wins the CBC 2014 Championship.
It is an absurdity and an aberration that the GABF is currently paying fees to the National Sports Commission (NSC) for Guyana National Basketball Squads to train at a state facility re: Cliff Anderson National Sports Hall. It is akin to His Excellency President Donald Ramotar paying to occupy the State House. We call on the Minister of Sports, Honourable Dr. Frank Anthony to ensure that this irrational practice is discontinued, whereby the GABF is singled out to pay NSC for National Squad training sessions at the National Sports Hall.
We have to honour our National Athletes and Ambassadors who seek to represent Guyana and proudly hold aloft the Golden Arrowhead. Their presence in Guyana over the forthcoming weeks requires all stakeholders on board to create a solid platform for success. We ask all in the sports community to pronounce on the myriad issues contained in this correspondence in an objective and thoughtful manner.
Even as we are very appreciative of the G$2 Million from Office of the President committed to fund Guyana’s teams to participate in the CBC 2014 Championships in Tortola, BVI, and we reach out to the Ministry of Culture, Youth & Sports for much needed additional funding; we feel it is vitally important now more than ever that we place principle first, especially principles that are consistent with Guyana’s National Interest.
Nigel Hinds
GABF President
